One respondent says: ‘The plan is a very good idea, but we hope that it will lead to an IMPROVEMENT to the village rather than become a document that is far seeing, but has not been acted upon. Future generations will not thank us for ignoring the wisdom of our efforts’
Short Term
- Explore with the relevant authorities/organisations the possibility of a late afternoon bus from Canterbury to Stoneway Park
- Explore with landowners/relevant authorities the possibilities for improved and new maintained footpaths (Town Road, and from Church Lane to Recreation Ground)
- Publicise procedure for residents to report potholes
- Set up a Good Neighbour Scheme
- Link access to local shops for those with mobility problems to the proposed Good Neighbour Scheme and more car sharing
- Ask farmers to keep footpaths as clear as possible throughout the year
- Produce a revised edition of the Welcome to Petham booklet
- Instigate a consultation in the wider community about mobile phone and internet connections
- Highlight the role of the Police Community Support Officers to reduce fear of crime
- Publicise the way to report noise nuisance
- Clarify planning regulations on alternative sources of power and heating in a conservation area and where appropriate apply pressure for change
- Clearer and increased communication from the Parish Council to reach those who don’t read Petham and Waltham Parish News or The Kentish Gazette

Medium term and long term (ongoing)
- Press Kent Highways over reduction of speed limits on Stone Street and in village centre and other speed reduction measures
- Ask landowners and authorities to ensure that stiles and signage are well-maintained
- Explore the possibility of working with volunteers to maintain the environment
- More of the same kind of activities in the Village Hall with a little more variety, particularly keep fit
- Explore the possibilities for weekly Post Office facilities
- Explore the possibilities for a Farmers’ Market
- Ensure that playground facilities are maintained to a high standard
- Monitor the maintenance of road signs
- Ask the Governors and Staff about the feasibility of using the school facilities for additional activities in evenings, weekends and school holidays
- Concerts for both adults and children in the Church
- Educational and other activities for children in the Church
- Alert the planning authorities to the strong concerns about developments which cannot be supported by the existing infrastructure and facilities, and the preference for conversions and small developments of affordable housing
- Monitor national progress with improvements to digital TV and radio signals leading up to the withdrawal of analogue signals
- Further investigations into the practicalities of group fuel buying schemes
- Encourage the use of local sustainable resources
- Raise local awareness of the energy efficiency measures possible, potential benefits, grant availability and costsDemonstrate positive action by the Parish Council within its pressure group role
